Substance Use Monitoring

Routine monitoring of clients' illicit drug and alcohol consumption to determine whether the selected therapy is having the desired effect is a standard part of all SUD programs.  Testing in the SUD program is designed to deter clients from using substances, not to punish or induce shame and guilt. Programs might use drug-free urine test results as a contingency for receiving specified rewards, reinforcing desired behaviors rather than punishing continued drug use.
